Humans of Bhutan

about one of the happiest countries in the world

‘The resources of a light heart and a sound constitution are infinite…When I look upon the time I have spent among the Hills it appears like a fairy dream”
- George Bogle, who visited Bhutan in the 18th Century

From the 17th-27th November 2013, the Raffles Institution Humanities Programme embarked on our annual overseas trip to Bhutan. Like Bogle, we too were enchanted by the incredible vistas Bhutan had to offer – from the hills and valleys, the trees and the thakins, to the cosmic abyss of the night sky. We heard the sound of silence. We breathed in the pristine air. We trekked up ancient mountains, and we slept under the stars. But most of all, we experienced the unbelievable thoughtfulness and genuine sincerity of the Bhutanese. We learnt that no barriers are insurmountable with a smile.

Even as progressive developments take this Himalayan Kingdom by storm, many Bhutanese live much as their ancestors did. Life is laid-back, made even more so by the Bhutanese propensity to take life slowly. We’ve been incredibly fortunate to be able to visit this extraordinary place – a place replete with myths and legends, where the best of traditional culture thrives alongside modernization and globalization.

Humans of Bhutan is a project that aims to capture the magic and charm of Bhutan and share them with our friends and viewers. We hope that you’ll enjoy these photos and short snippets about Bhutan as much as we’ve enjoyed taking them.

Tashi delek! (blessings and good luck!)
